On Sunday 18th August 2024, 300 people came to the garden to celebrate the life and achievements of the late great Benjamin Zephaniah. His writing and poetry addressed a variety of issues including racism and inequality in Britain and the plight of the refugee. In the early 80s he joined Newham’s Monitoring Project a community anti-racist organisation which provided support, information and outreach services.
In 2010 he said about Forest Gate:
“I hope it will stay multi-cultural and that no single culture will ever dominate”
We hope so too.
